Five fields for a sheet-pan chicken? No.

Hi Reader

Between work, practices, and travel games, dinner at our house has to be healthy, fast, and on the table before somebody needs a ride.

So I comment on a lot of recipe posts. You know the move. "Comment DINNER, and I'll send you the recipe."

When I comment, I want one thing: the recipe I just watched someone make.

The accounts I keep coming back to send it right away. @realfoodwholelife is one of my favorites. The recipe shows up, and sometimes more comes with it. Last month she ran Croctober, a whole series of slow cooker dinners. One recipe turned into a month of them. For a travel-sports family, that's exactly the extra I want, and it's why I keep watching her posts.

Some accounts ask for my email first. I'm fine with that, as long as it's one tap inside Instagram and the recipe is right behind it.

Where they lose me is when it turns into work. A form. A sign-in page. Five fields to get a sheet-pan chicken. I close it and just make spaghetti. Again.

So here's the deal I'll take every time. Make it easy to say yes, then give me something worth what I gave you.

Your buyers are making the same deal. When someone comments on your post about price drops in their neighborhood, they're asking you for something. Most agents DM a link. The buyer clicks, hits a sign-in screen, and leaves. You got the comment. You never got the name.

Move the ask into the DM, where it's one tap. Then send exactly what they asked for, plus one thing they didn't.

Recipe card → listing card

Send the recipe. Then the side dish.

Open the last three DMs you sent after someone commented. Read them out loud and ask:

  • Did they get what they asked for in the first message?
  • Was saying yes one tap, or was it work?
  • What came with it that they didn't ask for?

If the last answer is "nothing," write the one line you'll add next time.

Crystal Ortiz added 189 new contacts in her first 60 days, all from Instagram comments. She and Michelle Crochet of Connected are walking through the whole system live with our team on Tuesday, Nov 10 at 12 PM PT. It's free, and everyone who registers gets their guide with the exact prompts they post from. Save your seat. Can't make it live? Register anyway, and we'll send the replay.
